1. Construct the Top / Bird's-Eye View
From above, the cranium dominates the composition. Start with a near-full circle and draw the eye-line as a downward arc; the features gather toward the small chin at the bottom. The jaw and chin are mostly hidden by the skull mass, and the hairline does more work than usual in defining the face shape.
- The eye-line curves downward toward the center of the face.
- The chin tucks under the cranium and is partly hidden.
- The eyebrows sit above the eye arc, closer to the hairline.
- The forehead and hairline cover most of the visible face area.
2. Anatomy Notes for a Female Face
Female anime faces read through softness and larger features. 4. What to Watch for in This Reference
Top-view references are mostly about the hairline and the crown shape. Study how the hair parts and falls from above — the direction of the part and the volume at the crown are what make the hairstyle readable from this angle.
In a neutral face, the eyes are the clearest indicator of whether the drawing feels alive or stiff. Study how much white space shows above and below the iris — a relaxed neutral eye has roughly equal white above and below. If the iris sits too high, the face reads as surprised; too low and it reads as tired.
5. Common Mistakes at This Angle
Forgetting that the chin tucks under the cranium from above. The face should feel like a dome with a small chin peeking out at the bottom, not a flat circle.
Beginners often draw the neutral mouth as a perfectly straight line. A truly relaxed mouth has a very slight upward curve in the center. A dead-straight line reads as tense or suspicious.
